Chapter Seven
Nitro is in the courtyard chasing Laser all around the yard. He appears to be attempting to start a conversation, but cannot get close enough to utter one word. Laser is so fast, and far out in front of him, he is unaware of Nitroâs attempt to talk to him. Only when Laser stops to stretch, Nitro now out of breath finally catches up. âHey Laser! Great running today.â
âThanks kid whatâs up?â
âCan I have your autograph?â As he catches his breath and pushes a small piece of cloth towards Laser.
âAutograph? Who do you think I am, Lassie?â
Flattered Laser bites the cloth leaving his teeth impression on it, or giving out a dog autograph.
âNo youâre not Lassie, I know who you are. You are the fastest greyhound in the world.â âWell I donât know about the world, but definitely the fastest one in the yard. You are a pit bull arenât you?â
âYes I am. The fastest one here. My name is Nitro.â
âIâve never seen you around here before.â
âThatâs because I can never catch up to you, I run every day.â
âShouldnât you be on a treadmill or something?â
âNo, not until Iâm full grown. Can I ask you a question? See the other pit bulls over there on the other side of the fence? They all have lines on their faces, but I donât. What are those lines?â
âThose are marks left from tears running down their faces.â
âTears?â (Puzzled.)
âYes tears. They have cried so much in their lifetimes, that the tears have left tracks down their faces, like stains on a food bowl.â
âWhy do they cry so much?â
âBecause they donât like fiâ¦playing tag.â
âI love playing tag. I played today for fifteen minutes, and the human in the special suit was exhausted. I didnât even break a sweat.â
âYou are really something pit bull. But let the humans win a few rounds, ok. Donât bite the hand that feeds you ya know?â
âLet them win? I guess I could do that. Maybe play dead, like this.â Nitro flops to the floor playing dead, eyes closed, with his tongue out of his mouth.
Laser laughs. âYes just like that! Kid, you crack me up. So you like racing do ya?â
âMore than anything.â
âI have an ideaâ¦â
At dinnertime, Nitro an Oscar are side by side eating. Laser is across the room, eating from a bowl with considerably less food than anybody else.
âWhy does he get less?â
âHeâs a racing dog. The humans keep him dangerously thin, so he can run as fast as possible.
How much fun does racing look like now?â
âHeâs the greatest. They should feed him more though, heâd still win. I got his
autograph.â Nitro pulls out the bitten cloth dog autograph, and show it to Oscar.
âHow was tag today?â
âIt was ok. The new food makes me so hyper, I canât stop moving. Wanna know a secret? Iâm gonna see greyhoundsâ¦â
âWhat?â
âTomorrow, Laser said I can hide in his crate, and go to the races!â âIs your collar too tight?â
âWhile I ride with him, I arranged a spot for you with Tootsie.
